{Friday Photo Bliss} and New Action Coming Out!!!

type="html">

Every Friday I like to post one image I took that week that makes me happy. Today I decided to break tradition and post one image that expresses why I make the boys wash their feet when we get home from the park.  Disgusting Duke Feet!!!  Sorry I shared this, but I wanted you to feel my pain.

This is why I am usually the only Mom at the park who has boys running around in their Crocs with socks. That way they can remove the disgusting socks when they get home and their feet are basically clean.  Am I too neurotic?

I also wanted to post a before/after using my newest action/tutorial I am releasing this weekend.  I haven't named this one yet.  It automatically adds a moody matte yellowish tint to the image and adjustable sunbeams.  Any name suggestions? This one is really cool and I have a nifty way to add the sunbeams that you are going to enjoy learning!

CoffeeShop Action Flashback: CoffeeShop Reader Version!

type="html">

I love seeing your before/afters using my actions/presets and tutorials that you post on my Facebook page.  Please keep on posting them!  I want to highlight some of them on my blog to show off my talented readers.

Today I wanted to show a beautiful before/after sent to me by Tamara of BrandyShots.

Tamara used CoffeeShop Portrait ToolBox and Dandelion Wine to edit this stunning image.  I adore both shots, but I do love the colors in the "after" version, I think she really "pops".  Those freckles and eyelashes are killing me.  I love that this is not a normal portrait (eyes to the camera), yet still captures a beautiful moment.

Randy --

type='html'>Here we have Randy.  He has been around since the early 80s and from the looks of it he hit the ground running.    If only he could tell us a little about the action he has seen over the years.  The few (i.e. - many) scuffs, bumps, bruises give us an indication of what may have been witnessed.
Untouched or tuned for at least a few years

Love the green forearm wear -- this is what those "new relics" wish they  had!

Ooooo -- buckle rash

Yes, for those of you who know me and/or follow the blog, that is one of my favorite amps of all time in the last photo --- the mighty Supro Thunderbolt.  Randy is all the rage with his matching headstock and gold hardware.  Unfortunately, Randy did not get to hang out very long (about 30 minutes to be exact) before someone noticed the "inherent beauty of the entire package'.  Fortunately, he is a great friend of the shop so if push comes to shove.....

Outdoor Movie Night!

type='html'>

We're celebraing warmer weather and the end of the school year with an outdoor movie screening! For info on how to get started, visit this article on setting up your outdoor theatre.

Once you've got the technical side down, it's time for the fun part: popcorn!

We've made our own popcorn bowls using a roll of tickets. Check out our DIY to find out how we did it.

To protect the ticket bowl and make it reusable, we layered it with aluminum foil before loading it up with popcorn.

We set out a few topping: cinnamon sugar, parmasean mixed with a little garlic salt, and trail mix (candy coated sunflowers and craisins), which we're serving with our striped scoops.

Another great gift idea: give a ticket bowl, some scoops and popcorn! It doesn't get much more fun for Summer.

"I don't know how in the world I missed this wonderful tool from your workflow set. The exposure recover clipping is something I have wished all along where you want to do an all over brighten but your whites get washed out. It keeps the brights but brings the details back. What a lifesaver!! Going to be a go-to preset from now on!" - Hope
"I love your workflow presets!! They have made my life so much easier!!" - Kim

First Look: New Adams Tight Lies fairway woods

It’s been nearly 20 years since the original Tight Lies fairway woods debuted in 1995. The oddly shaped, stainless steel heads featured an “upside-down” design to lower the club’s center of gravity. Those ultra-friendly woods eventually proved to be a hit with Average Joes and catapulted the company from relative obscurity. The latest stainless steel incarnation features a similar shape...

Silvertone 1415

type='html'>

Here's our store mascot Dan E. Lectro with a couple of his best bosom chums - a vintage Silvertone 1415 and a late 90s Danelectro reissue.  Like most Silvertones, though, this guitar was actually built for Sears by another American guitar company, and from the looks of that masonite construction and lipstick pickup, I'd wager it's also Neptune City, New Jersey gal at heart.

That one pickup really screams, and the wiring has been untouched since the late 50s/early 60s - it still has the original potentiometers and the big fat "tootsie roll" capacitors inside.  Although, unlike some old Danelectro/Silvertone guitars, the paint has actually dried - leaving it thankfully bereft of the infamous curse of the eternally tacky neck that plagues some of these models.?

The one has the "dolphin nose" headstock instead of the earlier coke bottle shape, which dates it somewhere around 1959-1962.  These guitars are justifiably famous for their unique, funky tone that lends itself to prickly blues and clangy garage rock.  Come check it out - it's one of Dan's favorites!

CoffeeShop Mellow Yellow Sunshine PSE/Photoshop Action!

type="html">

I love capturing beautiful light in my photos, but sometimes I can't get the desired artistic effect  "in camera".  This doesn't limit me at all since it is so easy to add all types of beautiful lighting effects using Photoshop, PSE, or LR.  It might not look 100% realistic, but when you are creating photography art for yourself, realism is not always necessary or desired.

Today I want to introduce a new, very fun action called Mellow Yellow Sunshine (thanks Christylemon for the name!).  This action applies adjustable sunbeams where light is coming through trees/buildings and adds a subtle yellow tint.  I am going to post the Action UnWrapped step-by-step tutorial next so you can see what is going on while the action runs.

Here is my before image.  You must have areas of open sky seen through trees or buildings for this action to apply the light beams properly.

Start CoffeeShop Mellow Yellow Sunshine.  The first prompt will allow you to change the direction of your sunbeams.  Simply dial them in (circled in the screenshot above).  I keep the Distance set to 999 pixels.  As you can see the action is capturing the open areas of light and making it stream through the trees.

The second prompt allows you to blur the sunbeams.  Adjust this to taste.

After the action runs you will probably see too much light on your image.  Sunbeams appear wherever there are lighter areas in your image, so you will probably want to selectively remove the light.  You can also adjust the opacity of the Light layer if needed.  I usually keep it at 100%.

I used a black, soft, 100% opacity brush on the Light layer mask to remove light from the lower part of the image. You have to make a creative call on this, there is really no right or wrong way to edit the light.

I also wanted to burn in (darken) the bottom part of the image to make it pop, so I clicked on the Burn layer mask and painted over the bottom of the image with a low opacity, white brush.

Here is my finished image.  I love the light streaming through the trees.

You can adjust the Matte Effect, Color Tint, and Contrast Bump layers to taste.  I hope you enjoy making your own artistic sunlight edits using this action!  The step-by-step editing tutorial will be posted next.

Here is an image of K&D I edited using Mellow Yellow Sunshine.  K had her baby yesterday!!!

More One-Pickup Wonders

type='html'>

Here's a another power trio for you; a garage-rock triple threat consisting of a Danelectro-made Silvertone, a Teisco-made Kay "Tulip," and an earlier American-made Kay Vanguard.  This is the second Vanguard we've had and about the third or fourth Silvertone, but amazingly this is our very first "Tulip," despite its status as a ubiquitous pawn shop beater that everyone seems to remember owning at some point.

The main attraction to a lot of funky old guitars like these is that they work great for slide - you can bypass the often "quirky" action and fretwork while still taking full advantage of the unique tones that these vintage single coil pickups can crank out.  It's hard to choose when they are all so wonderfully rude, but it's hard to go wrong with the Vanguard's sweet DeArmond "Zippo" pickup.
